Influence of silica fume on the impact resistance of cement pastes obtained by the Charpy impact experiment

The objective of this study is to investigate the affection of silica fume on the impact resistance of hardened cement pastes. In this study, the specimens of the plain paste as well as the modified pastes were prepared with a constantly water to binder ratio of 0.5. For the specimens of silica fume modified cement pastes, silica fume will work at cement replacement in mixture, so that the content of cement will be declined, proportion of silica fume was chosen by 0%wt, 5%wt and 10%wt of cement usage. Besides, the impact resistance was obtained by Charpy impact experiment which is a modern digital equipment. The results show that, there are an increasing up to 50% and 71% when introducing silica fume by 5%wt and 10%wt of cement into the paste, respectively. Finally, the influence of different silica fume dosages on the impact resistance of hardened cement pastes were clarified in this study.
