A Study on the Design Method of Backward-Based School Curriculum and Its Implications for the Development of Competency-Based Curriculum at University

본 연구에서는 Wiggins와 McTighe가 「School by Design」에서 제시한 백워드 기반의 학교 교육과정 설계 방안에 대해 알아보고 이 설계가 역량기반 교육과정에 주는 시사점을 탐색해보려고 한다. 우리나라 대학교는 2008년부터 교육부의 주도로 역량기반 교육과정을 급속히 도입해왔다. 그러나 최근 교육부는 대학 재정지원사업의 방향을 대학의 자율성 강화에 두고 있음에 따라 우리나라 대학교는 학교가 중심이 되어 교육과정을 개발해야 되는 상황에 놓여 있다. 이러한 시점에서 우리나라 대학교는 효과적인 학습자 역량 강화를 위해 교육과정을 검토하고 내실화하는 방안을 논의할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 백워드 기반 학교 교육과정 설계가 역량기반 교육과정에 다음과 같은 시사점을 줄 수 있다고 보았다. 첫째, 학습자 역량강화의 목표를 구체화하고 이를 효과적으로 달성하기 위해 거꾸로 교육과정을 개발할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 학문 및 교과목에서 추구하는 학습자 역량강화 목표를 명확히 이해하고 핵심적인 이해와 수행 과제를 개발할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 교과목의 핵심적인 이해 및 수행목표를 기준으로 교육과정 매핑을 할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 학습자의 역량강화를 위해 나선형적으로 교육과정을 구성할 필요가 있다. 다섯째, 학습 원칙에 근거하여 교수학습을 고려하고 촉진자와 코치로서 교수자의 임무를 제시할 필요가 있다. 여섯째, 학습자 역량강화를 위한 교육의 과정에서 발생하는 어려움을 체계적으로 지원할 필요가 있다.

This study aims to examine the design method of backward-based school curriculum proposed in 「School by Design」 by Wiggins and McTighe(2007), and looks into implications for Korean universities to develop competency-based curriculum that enhances learning capacity effectively. Since 2008, Korean universities have rapidly introduced competency-based curriculum led by the Ministry of Education. Recently, however, the Ministry of Education has focused on strengthening the autonomy of universities in the direction of university financial support projects. Therefore, Korean universities now have to develop school-based curriculum. At this point, they need to discuss ways to review and strengthen the curriculum to effectively enhance learners’ competency. The design of a backward-based school curriculum that emphasizes the desired results may give the following implications to the development of competency-based curriculum that emphasizes the result of strengthening learners’ competence. First, it is necessary to develop curriculum backwards to materialize the goal of strengthening learner competence and to achieve it effectively. Second, it needs to clearly understand the goal of strengthening learner competency pursued in study and curriculum and to develop core understanding and performance tasks. Third, it is necessary to map the curriculum based on the core understanding of subjects and implementation goals. Fourth, it needs to construct a curriculum in a spiral form to strengthen the competency of learners. Fifth, it is necessary to consider teaching and learning on the basis of learning principles for strengthening learner competence and to present the task of teachers as facilitators and coaches. Sixth, it is necessary to systematically support the difficulties that arise in the course of education for strengthening learner competence.
