퇴계(退溪) 직전(直傳) 제자의 『상서(尙書)』읽기

조목(趙穆)의 「상서의의(尙書疑義)」는 『서석의(書釋義)』의 형식을 그대로 준용하면서도 『서석의(書釋義)』와 중복되지 않게 내용을 부가하였는데, 특히 『서집전(書集傳)』의 채침주(蔡沈注)에 대한 의문뿐만 아니라 퇴계의『서석의』의 내용에 대해서 의문을 제기한 곳은 퇴계학파의 상서 설을 이해할 수 있는 중요한 지점이다. 이덕홍(李德弘)은 「홍범(洪範)」을 중심으로 하는 유가적 질서에 주목하였는데, 우주에 대한 과학적 접근이나, 우주의 질서와 인간의 덕행의 관계에 대한 고민은 그의 「홍범월행구도(洪範月行九道)」에 잘 나타나 있다. 경전 상호간의 모순을 고민하는 모습은 실천학문의 전제로서의 경전의 의구심을 먼저 해소하려는 진실한 학문적 태도를 견지하였다. 조목과 이덕홍은 스승인 퇴계 이황의 상서학을 직접 사승하면서 사설의 심화를 도모했다고 평가할 수 있다.
