A fluorescent probe based on a quinolone scaffold was investigated as selective fluorescent copper ion probes under aqueous environment. The fluorescence intensity of probe 6 was significantly enhanced in a Cu²⁺-concentration dependent manner and it can selectively detect Cu²⁺ among various other metal cations including Zn²⁺, Hg²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺.
