Effects of Green Tea Powder on the Blood Glucose and Antioxidative Enzyme of Liver Tissue in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dietary green tea powder supplementation on blood glucose and antioxidative enzyme of liver tissue in diabetic rats. Twenty SD rats were divided into four groups normal control, normal green tea, diabetic control, and diabetic green tea group with supplementary green tea powder diet (0.1 g/kg diet). The results indicate that body weight gain, food efficiency ratio (FER) and insulin concentration were significantly lower in the diabetic groups than in the normal groups regardless of diet. The fasting blood glucose was significantly lower in the diabetic green tea group than in the diabetic control diet group. Activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase in liver were significantly lower in the diabetic groups than in the normal groups of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase were significantly green tea powder group than in the control group in diabetic group. It could be concluded that green tea powder supplementation positively influenced the blood glucose and antioxidative enzyme in diabetic rats. Furthermore, future studies assessing the proposed benefits of green tea powder in type 2 diabetes patients are warranted.
