Mastitis due to Serratia marcescens was observed in an intensive dairy cattle breeding station in the Republic of Korea during the summer of 1978. A study was made of 13 strains of Serratia marcescens isolated from mastitis milk; all the isolates produced prodigiocin on various culture media. An extensive study of the biochemical properties revealed a degree of uniformity that can be expected with this group of bacteria. Serratia species were highly resistant to ampicillin, erythromycin, lincomycin, novobiocin, penicillin and tetracycline whereas all the cultures were sensitive to carbenicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin and kanamycin. Various proportions of the strains were sensitive to other antibiotics including colistin, neomycin and streptomycin.
