In vitro percent homolysis in 0.05% paraquat, 0.10% dialuric acid and 2.4% hydrogen peroxide of erythrocytes of rat incubated with tocopherol levels from zero to 2.0μg were determined. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Studies with 0.05% paraquat showed low % hemolysis of erythrocytes incubated with very low level, 0.1μg of d-a-tocopherol for 2t hours. But hydrogen peroxide evoked to a large extent % homolysis and dialuric acid expended it’s hemolytic action even though % hornolysis was lower than that of hydrogen peroxide. 2. Incubation of erythrocytes with paraquat, dialuric acid and hydrogen peroxide for 4t hours led to increases of % homolysis. But increased hemolysis of the cell occurred to a large extent in the incubation with H₂O₂ and dialuric acid, while a increase of % hemolysis by paraquat was negligible. 3. Reaction of erythrocytes with 0.01% papaquat instead of 0.05% paraquat for 4½ hours showed increases of % hemolysis in all groups of the d-a-tocopherol treated erythrocytes and there were no differences in the protective effect against erythrocytes in relation to treatments by the different d-a-tocopherol levels.
