The effect of feeding Betadine and potassium iodate as iodine sources to laying hens (Waren) on egg weights were determined. Betadine and potassium iodate each was added to hen’s drinking water to povide 500 and 1,000 ppm, and supplied instead of pure hen’s dringking water for the consumption of excess iodine. Egg weights were reduced significantly from day 6 after administration of 1,000 ppm of Betadine and potassium iodate, respectively, but other groups were not affected. The iodine content of eggs increased gradually for 6 days and increased rapidly on day 8 to reach approximately 1,000㎍ per egg in groups dosed with Betadine, although iodine content of egg white were reduced on day 6 in contrast to a rapid increase in egg yolk on day 6. The iodine content of eggs from hens fed potassium iodate increased almost linearly for 8 days and reached 1,600-1,800㎍ per egg. But excretion of iodine into egg white and yolk from hens were the same pattern as Betadine. The iodine content of eggs returned to normal levels shortly in day 4 after administration of Betadine and potassium iodate is stopped.
