The studies on the occurrence of hepatic abscesses and the bacteriological examination among the slaughtered cattle were conducted at Woo-Seung abattoir in Seoul. Stomachs of cattle with liver abscesses also were examined to determine the relation of stomach lesions to abscess of the liver. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Among 11250 cattle slaughtered from March 2, 1983 to October 31, 1983, 267 heads of the cattle (2.4%) had hepatic abscess of various sizes. 2. Among 105 cases of the liver abscesses, Fusobacterium necrophorum was only isolated from 66 cases of the liver abscesses. F. Necrophorum and Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from 5 cases of the liver abscesses. F. necrophorum and unidentified Gram Positive rods were isolated from 12 cases. From 3 cases of the liver abscesses, F. Necrophorum was isolated in association with unidentified Gram negative rods. F. Necrophorum and unidentified mixed bacteria were cultured from 6 cases. From 13 cases of the liver abscesses, F. Necrophorum was not isolated. 3. The results obtained from cultures of 50 abscessed liver were also similar to those cultured of 105 individual abscesses. 4. The stomachs of the 267 heads of the cattle with liver abscesses were examined. Of these, rumenitis in the 136 heads (50.9%) of the cattle, hyperkeratocis of the rumens and reticulums in the 38 heads (14.2%), ulcer of the abomasums in the 28 heads (10.5%) and traumatic reticulitis in the 11 heads (4.1%) respectively were shown. 5. Hyperemia, hemorrhage, necrosis, edema in mucosae and gas formation were shown grossly in the acute rumenitis. Devillation, scars, ulcers, pits in the epithelium and nodules appeared in the chronic rumenitis. 6. Of the 267 heads of the cattle with liver abscesses examined, rumenitis appeared in 136 heads. Among the 136 cases, 126 heads (92.6%) contained the lesions in the anterior ventral sac of the rumen. 7. The association of gastric lesions and liver abscesses showed statistical significance in the cattle with the rumenitis and liver abscess complex.
