Physicochemical and microbiological tests for various pollutants in waste sewage waters flowed out from hospitals in different areas were carried out. The samples of waste sewage water, was collected from effluent swage water or extracts from adsorpted sponge piece, sponge swabing, were employed. For physiochemical tests, CN value and BOD value were measured, and for microbiological tests, bacterial cultures for gram-negative entheropathogens, including Salmonella spp. and coliform group and demonstration of enteropathogenic viruses, particularly hepatitis virus by tissue cultures using HELA cell and trypsinized monkey kidney cell lines were studied. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Of three experimental groups, the CN values of sewage waters obtained from experimental group A and B were 7.6-7.7 mg/ℓ and 7.8-7.9 mg/ℓ, respectively and they have 7.7 times as high values as the Korean admitted standard values (KASV). 2. Of three experimental groups, the BOD values of sewage waters obtained from group B and C were 126 mg/ℓ and 128 mg/ℓ, respectively and they were 2.5 times as high as the maximum value of KASV. 3. Total numbers of viable bacteria in sewage waters obtained from group B were 210×10³/ml. 4. In the sewage water samples obtained from group B, the isolation rate of of gram-negative enterobacteria of Salmonella spp. and coliform bacilli, Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. were each 99.35%, 0.46% and 0.18%. 5. By means of radioimmunoassay (RIA), the presence of hepatitis virus in the sewage water obtained from group A and B recognized, but virus was not demonstrated by tissue culture systems. This result indicates that the sewage water run out from hospitals are contaminated with gram-negative enteropathogenic organisms and the waste sewage waters from the hospitals are generally over the permitted ranges in terms of CN value and BOD valus.
