광견병 예방백신의 발달과정 및 종류별 성상에 관하여 종합적으로 고찰하였다. 본문은 사람 및 가축에 있어서의 예방백신에 관한 고찰과 야생동물에 대한 면역에 관련된 사항을 다루었다. 본문의 요지는 한국수의공중보건학회 1987년도 총회에서 특강자료로 발표한 바 있다.

The association of rabies in man with the disease in dogs has been known since ancient times. Carnivores generally constitute an enzootic reservior. Man and all warm -blooded animals are susceptible to the disease. Natural infection in man is always related to exposure to a rabid animal and the onset of symptoms may vary from days to many months and possibly years. Variation in the incubation period depends largely upon the site and severity of injury and the amount of infectious virus transferred at the time of exposure. Mortality in untreated cases approaches 100% in man and treatment is ineffective after symptoms have appeared. Rabies vaccine injected before exposure or within a short time after exposure can prevent the development of disease.
