A Survey on the laboratory animals in Korea

The enforcement of Korean Good Laboratory Practice on July in 1987 would demand a countermeasure from the medicine and fine chemicla industries in Korea, and the importance of laboratory animals increases gradually in the toxicity and efficacy test of fine chemicals including medicines, food additives and biotechnological materials. The objects of this study are to grasp the actual conditions of the qualify control and strain maintenance for laboratory animals, and to form the basis of development of the laboratory animal science in Korea. Priorily, this study asked to the related agencies manipulating laboratory animals. The subjects for investigation are as follows ; the size and system of laboratory animal room, the status of quality control and strain maintenance for laboratory animals, the career and academic background of the persons engaged in field of the laboratory animal science, the annual quantity consumed, etc. Then the totalization and analysis of the replies make it possible to grope for a solution to development of laboratory animal science in Korea. Depend upon the results of this study, in Korea, the quality control and strain maintenance for laboratory animals have scarcely been accomplished, and even the disease control, similarily. In the case of the needs for strain maintained animals, the imports have taken place of them, In addition, the scale of laboratory animal room is too small in comparision with them of European, American and Japanese, and manpowers in field of laboratory animal science are also scanty. For the rapid settlement of laboratory animal field in Korea, the government has to invest resolutely in that field until it is started along the right line, and has to induce the private cooperations to participate to the field of laboratory animal science and support it.
