A total serum protein content was measured by a rapid refactometer test in normal calves within 1 year of age, the sera collected from March to August 1988, and for assessment of colostral management. The results obtained from the experiments were summarized as follows: 1. The mean content of the serum protein among fifteen herds reading in the ranges 4.69g/100㎖ to 7.29g/100㎖ was 6.29g/100㎖. Two herds(13.3%) only were showed lower protein content and predicted higher disease susecptibility. 2. Total protein content of normal sera in calves were recongnized as low as 4.40g/100㎖ at 1 week of age and maintained as high as 6.0g/100㎖ and above at 4 months of age as a constant level. 3. Herd distribution of total serum protein content level was regarded as high as 24.2% in range of 6.1g/100㎖ to 6.5g/100㎖. 4. large size herds(5.88g/100㎖) were significantly lower content of the mean serum protein than did small/medium size herds(6.35g/100㎖). 5. In a large herd, dairy calves were significantly different in serum protein content than did beef calves(P<0.05). Butthis results will be changeable by calf caring and their colostral management.
