This study had been conducted from September, 1988 to May, 1990 to examine the utility of prostaglandin F2α(PGF2αa) on induced farrowing in 2798 pregnant sows, using sows on gestation by investigating administration time, dose of injection induced parturition, time, distribution of induction time, influences of PGF2α on litters and changes of plasma progesterone concentration. The results obtained are as follows ; Among 2798 pregnant sows administered with PGF2α, 2665 sows(94.89%) gave birth to piglets in 55 hours from administration to farrowing. When 10㎎ and 15㎎ PGF2α, was administered to sows at the day of 111, 112 and 113 after matting, the induced farrowing time was 42.20±34.61, 43.47±33.08 hours in sows 111 day pregnant, 34.53±12.29, 25.31±3.70 in sows 112 days pregnant and 26.04±4.98, 24.23±7.43 in sows 113 days pregnant. As the mean induced farrowing times were 26.42 hours in the sows after injection of 10㎎ PGF2α on days 113 of gestation, the fact that the more the time of administration was close to the expected day of parturition the less the time needed to reach the parturition induction was demontrated (p<0.05). As the dosage of PGF2α, was increased from 10㎎ to 15㎎, the interval between administration and parturition induction was shortened. There was no a stastical difference in total litter size and the number of stillbirth in relation to the time of PGF2α administration but the piglets born from sows being injected on days 111 of gestation showed the reduction of activity and suckling ability, Plasma progesterone concentration in sows before administration of PGF2α was 17.58±2.84ng/ml. However, the concentration was decreased to 8.90±3.85ng/ml for 12 hours before parturition and to 5.48±3.26ng/ml for 12 hours after farrowing.
