During the period from November 1989 to October 1990, epidemiological studies were performed to elucidate the prevalence of bovine dermatophytosis in Korea and the biological characteristics and the pathogenicity of Trichophyton verrucosum isolates were examined. Prevalenc of bovine dermatophytosis was found to be 6.4% (37/576) in dairy cattle and 46.4(334/720) in Korea native cattle and the most of infections were occured in the winter. The skin lesions were observed in eyelids(38.3%), face(24.6%), ears(17.2%) and neck(12.4%) and the causative agent were Trichophyton verrucosum(107/108) and T. mentagrophytes(1/108). Among 60 strains of T. verrucosum, 28 strains were identified var album, 16 strains var ochraceum and 12 strains var discoides according to the gross characteristics on Sabouraud dextrose agar. Among 95 strains of T. verrucosum, all the strains showed good growth on the basal medium plus inositol and thiamin(Trichophton agar No. 3)but faild to grow on Trichophton agar No. and 2 although showed poor growth on No.4. In the hair perforation test, 3 strains were failed to from the perforating organ on the hairs of guingea pig and cattle. In the pathogenicity test, confluent lesions covering the whole inoculated area were produced by 10⁷ cells/ml of each strain of var album, var ocharaceum and var discoides to the skin of guinea pigs.
