The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the types of Korean high school students’ motivation for learning English and their achievement. Specifically, this study looks into the influence of the types of motivation (integrative motivation vs. instrumental motivation) on students’ achievement. Data were collected from a total of 461 high school students from three schools through survey questionnaires. Results show that students with integrative motivation have better grades, on average, in an English proficiency exam, than those with instrumental motivation.
