English-to-Korean Translation on Personal Pronouns: Focusing on ‘Tangsin’(you)

This paper aims to analyze some aspects of one of Korean second person pronouns, ‘tangsin’ in English-Korean literary translations and propose a more tactic and proper usage of it. In a quantitative analysis of how ‘you’ is translated into Korean, we have found the fact that ‘tangsin’ shows a high frequency in English-Korean literature compared to other Korean literature. And in the texts analyzed, ‘tangsin’ was used regardless of their contexts. The phenomena can be construed as the ignorance of Korean address systems. The roles of Korean second person pronouns are divided according to the relationships between addressor and addressee, and sometimes a translator can t find the right address term for ‘you’. In the mean time, there are not full agreement of the roles of ‘tangsin’. That s why ‘tangsin’ seems to be an easy substitute for some ‘you’s to whom a translator can t give the right address terms. But this should be avoided because ‘tangsin’ is mainly used when married couple talk to each other, and when two adults talk in an aggressive tone. Misuse of it give false impression of impoliteness of a character or aggressive/negative tone of the scene.
