Objectives: The aim of this research was to assess the safety and effectiveness of [18F] Fluoroethyl-L-tyrosine PET, PET/CT (FETPET) for the diagnosis of brain tumor. Methods: The literature review for FET-PET was done using 8 domestic databases including KoreaMed and several international databases including Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-EMBASE, and Cochrane Library for articles published before August 8, 2017. The subcommittee and two reviewers independently performed each step of the assessment including literature search, application of the inclusion criteria, evaluation of the article quality, and data extraction. Results: We evaluated 16 studies to analyze the rate of complications associated with FET-PET. The subcommittee stated that the technique is safe as long as the safety regulations of radiation are complied with, since its radiation effective dose is not of the level inflicting harm to human body. For effectiveness, In one study on MET-PET, the intervention showed sensitivity 0.91, specificity 1.00, MET-PET sensitivity 0.91, specificity 1.00. In four studies on FDG-PET, the intervention showed sensitivity 0.86~1.00, specificity 0.33~1.00, FDG-PET sensitivity 0.27~1.00, specificity 0.44~0.90. In one study on MR spectroscopy, the intervention showed sensitivity 0.88, specificity 0.88, positive predictive value 0.94, negative predictive value 0.78, test accuracy 0.88, while MR spectroscopy showed sensitivity 1.00, specificity 0.81, positive predictive value 0.92, negative predictive value 1.00, test accuracy 0.91. Conclusion: FET-PET is a safe and effective technique for the idiopathic or recurrent diagnosis of brain tumor in patients with (suspected of) the condition.
