In Korea the use of Enramycin has begun since 1981 and the amount of use has increased due to its efficacy against gram-positive bacteria and little absorption into the gastro intestinal organ. At now Enramycin potency is being assayed by microbiological method like this : extraction solvent ; 2% HCI in MeOH or acetone : 4N HCI : D.W (40 : 15 : 45) and bacteria for assay ; Bacillus subtillus ATCC 6633. But this method is not suitable for products as treated with specially processed raw matarial or contaminated with lipid or protein which is a sort of media for cultivating enramycin producing bacteria. So improved method is needed and researched as follow. Such a condition as 1N HCI : acetone : D.W : 0.01% EDTA(4.3 : 29.7 : 51 : 15) shows best recovery rate. For assaying colistin potency in enramycin-colistin complex products such conditions as pH 6.0, 10% phosphate buffer or acetone : 1N HCI : pH 6.0, 10% phosphate buffer(5 : 0.5 : 94.5) show best recovery rate instead of pH 6.0, 1% phosphate buffer.
