Reviewed the technical reports for the mechanisms of nitrate intoxication and clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatments of methemoglo binemia In ruminants. Nitrates is reduced to nitrite by microorganisms in the rumen and then to ammonia. But, if the formation of nitrite is too high, the nitrite ion is absorbed and it may result methemoglobinemia. Methylene blue is used for the enzymatic reduction system in the erythrocytes.
