Simultaneous determination of tetracyclines in beef, pork, and chicken by high-performance liquid chromatography using matrix solid phase dispersion extraction

A method for the isolation and liquid chromatographic determination of tetracyclines (Oxytetracycline, OTC ; Tetracycline, TC; Chlortetracycline, CTC ; and Doxycycline, Doxy) in beef, pork and chicken samples is presented. Tetracyclines-fortified muscles(0.5g) were blended with octadecylsilyl(C₁₈) derivatized silica (2g). The C₁₈/muscle matrix was used to prepare a column that was washed with hexane(10ml) and then eluted with benzene(10ml) and 10ml of methanolic oxalic acid(0.01M oxalic acid in methanol). The method uses small volume of solvents, has a limited number of sample manipulation, and require no pH adjustment, making this method attractive when compared to classical isolation procedures for tetracyclines.
