The present investigation was undertaken to examine the characteristics of purified Escherichia coli (0111 : B4) endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide(LPS), given subcutaneously to rats (does : 2.5mg/kg). Certain hematological and blood biochemical values were studied. Hematological changes such as leukopenia, decrease in MCV, increase in RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit, and decrease followed by increase in MCHC were observed, but change in MCH was not significant. Serum Ca, Fe, K, P and Zn contents were dropped and Cu increased. However, changes in Cr, Mg, Mo and Na contents were not seen. There were declines in serum glucose and total bilirubin concentrations and increases in albumin, total protein and cholesterol, and rise followed by fall in triglyceride. Blood urea nitrogen was not significantly changed. Also, serum enzyme activities were changed, that is, alkaline phosphatase activity was reduced and alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities showed early rise followed by late fall. The results obtained in this experiment indicate that Escherichia coli LPS has important effects on haematological and blood biochemical changes and these data will be useful for the clinical biochemical diagnosis of Escherichia coli infection in livestock.
