Occurrence of rabies in cattle in Korea

Five cattle submitted from Kyunggi and Kangwon province showed anorexia, severe salivation, bellowing and excitement. These cattle were diagnosed routinely for rabies infection in Pathology Division of the Veterinary Research Institute from February to October, 1994. They showed all positive results to the rabies test such as histopathological findings, indirect fluorescent antibody test, mouse inoculation test and transmission electron microscopy. Histopathological lesions were perivascular cuffing, gliosis, neuronophagic nodule formation and meningeal vascular congestion. In the histopathological examinations, eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions, Negri body, were observed frequently in the Purkinje cells of cerebellum than in hippocampus. The bullet-shaped or bacilli-shaped rabies viral particles were observed in Purkinje cells of cerebellum. In the point of retrospective history taking, wild animals such as raccoons, badgers, or weasels that existed in DMZ and mountain area were suspected to be the source of the rabies.
