Immune Regulatory Effects of Evening Primrose Oil ( EPO )

This study was performed to investigate the effects of the evening primrose oil (EPO) on various immune responses of normal or Bl6 cell implanted-mice, and tumorigenesis of B16 cell implanted-mice and chemical carcinogen, methylcholanthrene(MCA)treated-mice. EPO enhanced Arthus reaction, antibody production and rosette formation rate of normal mice against SRBC, but not DTH reaction. The phagocytic activities of mouse peritoneal macrophage were increased by EPO. On the immune responses of mouse splenocytes to Con A stimulation, EPO augmented MIF and IL2 production and proliferative responses. But SAC-stimulated splenocytes were not enhanced 1gG secretion and proliferative responses of EPO-treated mice. According to treatment of EPO to mice, the significant enhancement of NK cell activities in mouse splenocytes were due to increment of the target binding cell capacity and the target lytic activity of effector cells. EPO was inhibited tumorigenesis of chemical carcinogen, MCA treated-mice and melanoma Bl6 cell implantedmice. These results led to the conclusions that EPO contains potent immunemodulatory and anti-tumor agents.
