Mycoplasmal pneumonia of swine (MPS) caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae has been recognized as a serious impediment to swine production due to a chronic respiratory disorder which results in the weight loss and decreased feed conversion. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in the humeral and cellular immune responses of pigs in the histopathological lesions during experimentally-induced pneumonia caused by M. hyopneumoniae. Eleven one-month-old male pigs that were respiratory pathogen-free and seronegative to M. hyopneumoniae were divided into two groups : an infected group of 6 pigs and an uninfected control group of 5 pigs. The infected group was inoculated intratracheally with 4ml of 10⁷ CFU/ml J101 strain of M. hyopneumoniae per two day for 9 weeks, and then followed 6 booster injections with PHLS strain. Pigs were sacrificed at 3, 7, 14, 28 and 42 days after last inoculation, and sequential gross and histopathologic examinations were followed. Concurrently, the distribution of M. hyopneumoniae, T and B lymphocytes in the pneumonic lesions were observed by immunocytochemical method utilizing polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies.
