Newcastle disease(ND) is an acute, highly contagious disease causing high mortality in many avian species including chicken, wild birds such as pheasant, quail and partridge. Recent use of intensive raising system for the purpose of meat production and game in pheasant flocks has brought about an increase in incidences of many kinds of infectious diseases including ND. In this studies, we investigated ND outbreaks in pheasant flocks located in Chungbuk province. In the period(1991. 3~1993. 8) of investgation, 8 pheasant flocks were diagnosed as ND. The age of infected pheasants ranged from 18 days to 8 months. Morbidity(26.9~76.1%) and mortality(12.1~66.4%) were different between flocks. Clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions were similar to those of ND in chicken. An increase in HI antibody titers of convalescent sera compared to hemagglutination inhibition(HI) antibody titers at outbreaks was observed. The viruses were isolated from 5 of the 8 infected flocks and identified as ND virus(NDV) by the HA, HI, and indirect fluorescence antibody assay(IFA) test using NDV reference serum.
