Studies on Mitochondrial Activities Following Chronic Mercury Treatment in Korean Black Goats I. Effect of Inorganic Mercury Compound

3 groups of fourth 4 month old male Korean native black goats were used in this study. 1st group fed pellet type feeds for growing goats, and 2nd and 3rd group fed feeds contained 1 ppm and 5 ppm mercury added as mercuric chloride into normal pellet feeds, respectively. Body weight gains, mercury contents in blood and hair, and chemical values in blood were determined in each group monthly during experiment period of 5 month. Mercury residues were measured in internal tissues after 5 month and effects on mitochondrial activities in heart, liver, kidney, and skeletal muscle were studied. Although monthly weighings indicated individual variations of growth in response to mercury intake by 2nd and 3rd groups, body weight gains were no differences among 3 groups. Packed cell volumes were in the wide range of 27.5~40.6 (ml%) in all groups tested, but no differences among 3 groups.
