Purification of Verotoxin E from Escherichia coli and Receptor Specificity to Verotoxin E

This study was designed to purify Verotoxin E from Escherichia coli that cause edema disease in swine and to isolate glycolipids that serve as receptor for VTE isolated from swine intestine and to confirm the specificity between verotoxin and its receptor. The results were summarized as follows : Verotoxin E(VTE) was extracted by addition of polymyxin B sulfate from E. coli E57 (O138:K81). The purification of VTE was accomplished by a series of column chromatography techniques : anion-exchange, chromatofocusing, cation-exchange column chromatography. The purified VTE revealed 1.8×10⁷ CD₅₀/ml in cytotoxicity analysis for Vero cell but not effect on HeLa cell.
