Effect of Codonopsis pilosula on the Cellular Immunity

Codonopsis pilosula(CP) radix has been used as a seasonal food and traditional tonic medicine for the past years in Korea. These studies were attempted to assess the effect of the Codonopsis pilosular extract on the various cellular immune responses of normal BALB/c mice. CP extract enhansed Arthus reaction, DTH reaction, antibody production and rosette forming rate of mice against sheep red blood cells(SRBC). The phagocytic activities of mouse peritoneal macrophage were increased by CP extract. CP extract augmented the proliferative response of human tonsillar lymphocyte to PHA, Con A and Staphylococcus aureus Cowan l(SAC)-stimulation and CP extract augmented the proliferative response of human tonsillar lymphocyte for itself. NK cell activities of mouse splenocytes were somewhat increased when fed CP extact for 17 days before sacrifice. These results indicate that CP extract contains immunomodulatory or immunoactive agent.
