Analysis of Energy Consumption Characteristics of a Medium Sized Office Building

Recently many efforts have been tried for saving energy in buildings. All through the building life cycle, over 80 percent of the energy is known to use in the course of operating stage, and therefore it is very important to save energy in this stage. The continuous on-line and off-line monitoring were carried out in this study for a medium-sized office building in Seoul to obtain energy saving plans for a test-bed building. As results, we could find several methods reducing building energy through the analyses of the daily energy consumption patterns. The period of daily peak power occurrence was changed with season, and the amount of the heating energy consumption was 27% higher than that of the cooling energy consumption. In the view point of the cooling load greater than the heating load generally in domestic office buildings, the operation plan of the gas-fired boilers and electric heat pumps would be very important for building energy saving. In winter season, there is a power peak that is comparable to the summer season. Therefore, in heating operation, it is necessary to reduce power peak and heat energy through proper combination of gas boiler and EHP.
