구비설화 속 장애인이야기와 대중문화의 소통

이 연구는 구비설화 속에서 장애인이야기와 대중문화의 소통이 어떻게 이루어지는지 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 설화 속 장애인들은 왜곡된 시각과 편견에서 맞서서 치열하지만 슬기롭게, 불편하지만 극복하는 삶의 한 양상을 보여주고 있다. 구연자들은 그러한 장애인이야기를 통하여 그들만의 이야기문화를 만들어가며 장애인들의 삶을 이해하고자 한다. 전통시대 판소리나 사당패 놀이, 화전놀이 등이 대중들의 동적인 놀이문화를 이끌었다면, 구비설화는 사랑방이나 안방 등에서 나누는 정적인 이야기문화를 이끌었다고 할 수 있다. 그리하여 이 글에서는 설화향유자들이 장애인이야기를 통하여 장애인과 비장애인이 협력하며 상부상조의 생활문화를 만들어가고, 나아가 구연자들이 장애인이야기를 통하여 그들의 치열한 삶의 방식을 이해하고 그들과 협력하는 소통문화를 이끌고자 하는 것을 대중문화라 일컫는다. 구비설화 속 장애인이야기에서 장애인의 능력은 비장애인에 대한 우위성을 갖게 하거나 장애인과 장애인의 협력은 한 사람의 완성체를 만들어내기도 한다. 즉, 상대의 단점은 자신에게는 장점이라는 사실을 인지하면서 협력하는 삶은 언제나 실패하지 않음을 보여준다. 또 비장애인들의 왜곡된 시선이 아니라 ‘우리 함께’라는 공동체 의식을 드러내는 데는 부족함이 없다. 나아가 장애인은 사람들과의 관계 속에서 정의되는 상대적 개념이므로 이들에 대한 올바른 이해가 필요하며 문학연구자들의 지속적인 관심을 가져야할 때라 여긴다.
