During the period from May 1995, through April 1996, 315 dairy farm were visited and examined the condition of milking machines in use. Problems for installation and maintenance of milking machine were investigated according to somatic cell count in the herd milk above 750,000 per ml. The results have shown that the prevalence of inadequate milking machine with bucket, pipe line or parlor system were 65.0, 32.3 and 2.5%, respectively. The major problems for installation and maintenance of bucket milking machines were vacuum level(92.6%), vaccum supply line(82.9%), liner(82.9%), vaccum gage (65.8%), vacuum controller(40.9%), vaccuum pump(20.0%) improper unit number per milker(35.6), pulsator(34.6%) and, vaccum cock and short horse etc(62.9). A total of 88 pulsators checked were not properly operating. Faulty liner and inadequate vacuum level were also found at 81% and 75.4% of farms with pipe-line milking system, respectively. Improper unit number per milker was the most serious problem in milking practices and management observed. The systemic analyses of milking system by using vaccum recorder, air flowmeter and vaccum guage have demonstrated that an inappropriate milking machine failure currently used were the most important factor in injurying cow teat.
