The present study was carried out to investigate effect of sodium thiosulfate on heavy metal excretion in rat. The rat, given each sodium arsenite and lead acetate which were adjusted to 5ppm and 2,000 ppm with tap water for 4 weeks, was administrated 20, 40 or 80 mg of sodium thiosulfate per day. The arsenic and lead levels were determined in the rat each at the 1st, 3rd and 7th day from the beginning of sodium thiosulfate administration. The arsenic and lead contents in liver, kidney, muscle, serum, urine of the rat received each sodium arsenite and lead acetate for 4 weeks were 0.0439±0.0175 and 2.3194±1.3342 ppm, 0.1017±0.0669 and 10.7571±0.1664 ppm, 0.0150±0.0052 and 0.4249±0.2953 ppm 0.0596±0.0373 and 9.8683±2.4693 ppm, 0.0900±0.0100 and 12.7117土5.0416 ppm, respectively. The serum chemical values of each adminstration group of sodium arsenite and lead acetate, inspite of some differences compared with control group, retained normal level. The arsenic residue levels of liver, kidney and urine of the rat which were treated with sodium thiosulfate each 20, 40 or 80 mg per day were decreased in proportion to increase of administration period and dose. Uncommonly their serum which were collected at 3rd day from the beginning of sodium thiosulfate administration contained arsenic higher than that of control group. But sodium thiosulfate had no effect on arsenic excretion of muscle. The lead residues of sodium thiosulfate administration group were slightly decresaed in proportion to extension of administration period, but sodium thiosulfate may be not beneficial to lead excretion in rat received lead acetate.
