This study was conducted to examine the outbreak of dermatitis and its causative agent that occurred in 24 rats and 18 mice. The skin mycofloras of 135 healthy rats and 74 mice were also examined. These laboratory animals were derived from three laboratory animal hauses in the Taegu and Kyungpook, between 1996 and 1997. The first house, named as A, had clean facilities and an excellent husbandry environment. The second house, named as B, had a good husbandry environment. The third house, named as C, had a bad husbandry environment and facilities in poor condition. The causative agent of dermatophytosis in rats was identified as Trichophyton mentagrophytes (granular type and downy type). However, no dermatophytes was isolated in mice. Twenty three isolates of T. mentagrophytes were isolated from 12(8.9%) asymptomatic rats and 11(45.8%) alopecic rats. Among the three houses for laboratory animal breeding, no dermatophytes was isolated in A, 13 strains(11.7%) were isolated in B, and 10 strains(33.3%) were isolated in C. The skin mycofloras of rats were yeast(27.4%), Cladosporium sp.(20.0%), Aspergillus sp.(14.1%), Penicillium sp.(13.3%), Scopulariopsis sp.(11.9%), T. mentagrophytes (8.9%), Alternaria sp.(5.9%), Circinella sp.(4.4%), Paecilomyces sp.(2.2%), Monilia sp.(2.2%), Rhizopus sp.(1.5%), Mucor sp.(1.5%), Chaetomium sp.(1.5%) and Cephalosporium sp.(0.7%). In mice, there were yeast(50.0%), Cladosporium sp.(21.4%), Scopulariopsis sp. (19.6%), Alternaria sp.(12.5%), Aspergillus sp.(10.7%), Penicillium sp.(10.7%), Mucor sp.(7.1%), Monilia sp.(5.4%), Paecilomyces sp.(3.6%), Coccidiodes sp.(1.8%), Verticillium sp.(1.8%), and Circinella sp.(1.8%).
