This study was carried out to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of Salmonella strains which had been isolated in Korea in 1997. Out of 855 Salmonella strains, 35 serotypes were found. The most common serotype was S. enteritidis(42.6%), secondly S. typhimurium(24.2%) and thirdly S. typhi (12.6%). Non-typhoidal Salmonella serotypes, S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium strains showed major group of serotypes, the proportion of which was nearly 68.8%. The isolation rate of Salmonella strains was much different. by sexual difference. In case of S. enteritidis, the isolation rate of the strains was distinctly higher in female group than male group as shown 222 strains in female and 134 strains in male. Geographical isolation rate of Salmonella strains showed highest in Kangwondo and lowest in Kwangju city. In seasonal variation, the Salmonella strains were most highly isolated in April ot June and S. typhi strain was characteristically isolated through twelve months a year including winter. Out of 108 S. typhi serotype strains, Phage types M1, E1, D1, A, K1 and G5 were determined. Most predominant phage type was M1 and the second common phage type was E1. In the phage typing of S. typhimurium strains, phage type 104L, 195, 17, 104H, 146, 204, 22, 135, 192, 203, 21, 99, 94 and 193 were determined. Phage type 104L was the most predominant type in S. typhimurium.
