The effect of mercuric chloride on electron transport system of intact mitochondria and submitochondria from heart tissue in indigenous Korean cattle was evaluated in vitro. NADH oxidation by submitochondria was 9.1 fold more active than that of intact mitochondria. Higher Hg concentrations than 1.3×10⁻⁶M in submitochondrial suspension decreased NADH oxidation and NADH oxidation was completely abolished in Hg concentration of 1.3×10⁻⁴M. while on the other low concentrations of 1.3×10⁻⁷M and 1.3×1⁻0⁸M Hg induced a slight elevation of NADH oxidation as compared to control values.
