미국 수의사들은 중앙의 연방정부, 주정부 및 지방정부의 공중보건분야 뿐만니라 고등교육 기관과 사설기관의 보건분야에서 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 더욱이 산업 및 경제의 발달로 인하여 사람 및 동물의 질병발생 양상이 달라지고 있어서 공중보건의 영역도 변화하고 있다. 과거에는 전염병관리가 공중보건사업의 주축을 이루는 것이었으나 최근에는 만성질병 및 공해로 인한 건강문제가 대두되고 있으며 또한 광우병, Avian Influenza와 같은 인수공통전염병과 HIV와 Ebola와 같은 과거에는 찾아볼 수 없었던 질병들이 나타나고 있으며 햄버거가 오염되어 발생한 E. coli O157 식중독 등으로 인하여 공중보건의 영역이 과거와는 다른 방향으로 전개되고 있어서 예방의학에 중점을 두고 교육을 받은 수의사들을 각급 공중보건분야에서 요구하게 되었다(2,7.12.13). 앞으로도 공중보건분야에 더욱 많은 수의사들이 관여하게 되어 국민건강증진에 이바지할 것으로 생각된다.

The role of veterinarians in American public health field was reviewed in the past and the present. In the eighteen’s century, the role which veterinary medicine had to play in public health was clearly seen in much of Europe, and competent veterinary scientists were ready and eager to work in public health and general medicine. Scientific veterinary medicine began in the United States in 1884 with the establishment of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI). Since then many veterinarians contributed to basic knowledge about many infectious diseases and immunology to protect human beings against diseases important in public health. Nowadays, veterinarians are working at various research institutes and law enforcement offices of federal government in such fields as epidemiology, infectious disease, milk and food sanitation, comparative pathology and physiology, laboratory animal medicine, industrial health, air pollution, renal diseases research and experimental surgery. Veterinarians are also health officers at state and local governments and taking care of the public health affairs for the people at state and local government levels. Veterinarians in public health play an important and vital role not only in government but also in academic and non-governmental organizations.
