With considerable increasement of stray cat population in Korea, the public health problem has been increased. However, there was few reports on the stray cat populations and their zoonosis pathogens. The present study was conducted to examine serotypes of the isolates and the antimicrobial susceptibility of Esherichia coli isolated from captured 72 stray cats from January to June 2000. In 37 E. coli isolates were classified by agglutination with antisera to E. coli O antigen. Thirty one isolates (84%) were serotype O153, two isolates (5%) were serotype O142, two isolates (5%) were serotype O166, one isolates (3%) was serotype O78, and one isolates (3%) was serotype O151. Of the 102 E. coli isolates, sixty-five (68.8%) were not typable. The majority of isolates showed high susceptibility to norfloxacin, gentamycin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and enrofloxacin and resistant to bacitracin, lincomycin, penicillin and vancomycin.
