The States and Limits of the Public Education in Cambodia

This article is for understanding the public education and culture in Cambodia. For these purposes, I focus on the history, current state, and limits of the public education in Cambodia. The public education in Cambodia was begun much earlier before the French protectorate by Buddhist Monastery. However, the modern public education was installed by the French from the early 20th century. Passing the independence and Khmer Rouge regime, it has faced many twists and turns. Since the 1980s, Cambodia state has tried to modernize the country through public education and has achieved in its quantity, but it has a long way to go in its quality. I try to read it with the ‘Mandala scheme’, the political scheme in ancient Southeast Asia. In the dynamics between ‘Manda’-powerful countries and ‘la’-Cambodia in the international political level, ‘Manda’, individual leaders and ‘la’- people who have always placed periphery in the state political level- decide the quality of the public education in Cambodia.
