명량해전 관련 이순신 주변인물 고찰

명량해전은 그 결과만 두고 보더라도 세계 해전사에 길이 남을 대첩이다. 무엇보다 칠천량해전에서 수군이 궤멸된 뒤 이뤄낸 승리라서 더없이 값진 것이다. 그리고 대첩의 저변에는 백성에게 절대적 믿음을 가진 이순신이 다시 통제사에 올라, 관군과 백성이 한마음으로 왜적을 무찌르고자 하는 의지가 있었다. 하지만, 지금까지 이순신과 수군 이외의 이들에 대한 연구가 미진한 실정이다. 가장 큰 원인은 이들에 대한 자료가 부족한 탓이다. 당시 상황을 가장 자세하게 기록한 『난중일기』를 보더라도 전란 중에 이순신이 혼자 기록한 것이기 때문에 내용이 소략할 수밖에 없다. 이에 개별 문집을 검토하여 명량해전에 참여한 세 명의 인물을 찾아 서술하게 되었다. 본문에서 언급한 세 사람은 명량해전에서 수군을 고립되지 않게 도와준 대표적인 사례이다. 배응경은 내륙의 관군으로 정유재란 때 나주 목사가 되어 수군에 협조하였고, 오익창과 정운희는 모두 영광 사람으로 명량해전 때 피난선에서 수군에 원조하였다. 특히 뒤의 두 명은 피난민으로서 당시 수많은 민간인들이 전투에 참여한 것을 확인할 수 있게 해준다. 명량해전에 민간인들이 수군의 뒤에서 군수물자를 제공하거나, 소리를 질러 성원하였던 것은 그 의의가 매우 크다고 하겠다.

Sea battle of Myeong-ryang(鳴梁海戰), leaded by General Lee Sun-sin(李舜臣) is among the most dramatic naval warfares through the history over the world. The story, moreover, increased in value as the Chosun Navy won the war after they got demolished in the previous sea battle of Chilcheon-ryang. The source of power that brought the win to Choseon was the strong unity and will between the forces and civilians against Japanese invading troops. The source of the unity and will, as well as, was General Lee’s leadership of trust in people. However, the studies on the sea battle so far have been limited in General Lee and the navy at that time. The first reason that the studies couldn’t focused on the people out of the navy was lack of the records. For instance, Nanjungilgi(亂中日記) was poor in substance as it was just General Lee’s personal diary written through the war time. This is the study on the three men who participated the war found out in the separate literatures. The three men were models who supported Chosun navy as civilian. Army officer Bae Eung-gyeong(裵應褧) supported the navy since he took office as Mayor of Naju in Jeonra province. Oh Ik-chang(吳益昌) and Jeong Woon-hee(丁運熙), refugees from Yeonggwang, show that a number of civilian took part in the battle. It deserves a profound study that the civilian supported the navy in sea battle of Myeong-ryang by providing military demands or raising a great war whoop.
