‘However’복합관계사 구문의 통사, 의미 구조에 대한 연구

  • 33

The aim of this paper is to introduce the previous studies of AP-headed free relatives, pointing out some problems, and finally suggest possible solutions. After briefly describing linguistic phenomena of AP-headed free relatives, this study will critically review Bresnan and Grimshaw (1978) and Larson (1987). Then, this article will identify problems with Larson s suggestions and propose solutions accordingly. According to Bresnan and Grimshaw, free relatives without prepositions are derived from a PP-headed relative, while those with prepositions are derived from NP-headed relatives. Against them, however, Larson postulated that APs must have Case and the adverbial suffix -ly has a function as a Case assigner. Therefore, An adverb phrase can be an adjective phrase. However, Larson s suggestion is not sufficient to be generalized in that Larson deals only with adverbs ending with-ly. That is, there is another adverb which can satisfy his suggestion, which is called “flat adverbs” such as hard, fast, etc. This paper suggests that many other types of adverbs should be included in this analysis and classified into two different categories in respect to Case theory.
