『새장에 갇힌 새가 왜 노래하는지 나는 아네』의 특징적 서사

  • 52

This paper aims to explore how Angelou offers a narrative technique in advancing her major themes of identity, racism, motherhood and sexuality in her autobiography. Although Angelou accommodates her literary style in various settings which her story moves through, this paper particularly pays attention to the significance that Angelou’s willingness to write about authentic blackness from the inside in an autobiographical form, not in a novel form. In Angelou’ autobiographical writing, there is not only the victim positioned as the black woman, but also the survivor holding the strong vitality and outstanding creativity of the black female ancestors who made their presence possible. In this context, this paper tries to show how successful Angelou was in using literary style to drum home her own messages to her readers.
