This paper aims to find out the role and effect of dashes frequently used in Emily Dickinson s poems. First, this paper explores the way in which literary critics perceive the role of dashes in Dickinson s poems. Second, by taking Miller s view on Dickinson s using dashes, this paper argues that Dickinson s dashes operate rhetorically and are used intentionally. In other words, Dickinson implemented dashes on purpose to effectively deliver her thoughts, feelings, lines, and poetic words to the reader in each poem. Thus, this paper reveals the effect of Dickinson s dashes in terms of how dashes in Dickinson s poem isolate words, create places for pauses and ponderousness, and increase the reader s curiosity.
