This paper is to re-evaluate the literary value of Mark Twain s The Mysterious Stranger, one of his later writings. His post 1890 works have been viewed as a dismal closing act to his spectacular earlier work. But in The Mysterious Stranger, Twain s powerful imagination introduced various aesthetic methods such as dream, time travel, complex self. These are obviously used as a backdoor approach to social criticism relevant to his time. In this novel, Satan, Traum plays a major role of social criticism. By using various aesthetic methods, Satan, as a spokesman of Twain, indicts all sorts of hypocrisy and fraudulence made in the name of the religion. Besides, he criticizes human beings corrupt nature and moral sense as well as cowardly conformity with equal vehemence. Twain in his later years remained as a serious critic in much the same way as he did throughout earlier phases.
