The aim of this study is to investigate Morrison s views of relationships in her eighth novel Love. I have focused on how love has affected and perhaps altered each of these characters. For Morrison, these relationships are crucial and influential. Her perspective regarding the nature of love in this particular novel transcended race. Love is not a novel that attempts to relate the ‘black experience,’ rather it is an attempt to describe the influence that love has on us all. This story follows a wealthy family in the 1940 sand all the characters have a direct and indirect influence on one another, both positively and negatively. Morrison s audacious exploration into the nature of love is rich in nature containing memorable scenes which demonstrate a profound understanding of how devastating relationships can be when love does not work properly. We learn how love can be fostered and maintained and specifically how constructive, meaningful relationships are made possible through communication and mutual understanding.
