동해안 어촌 지역의 언어 문화 연구

A Study on Korean Language and Culture in a Fishing Village in the East Sea Region

이 글은 급속한 사회 변화로 소멸해가는 동해안 어촌 지역의 언어를 통해 그 언어 현상을 그 지역 사회의 사회문화적 요소와 함께 설명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 어촌 환경과 관련되는 바람, 물, 지형을 살펴본 후 동해안의 대표적인 어종인 오징어와 명태의 명칭 분화를 행위자에 따라 살펴보았다. 또 어촌에서 주로 먹는 음식과 어민들이 사용하는 관용표현을 통해 어촌의 사회적, 문화적 요소가 어떻게 언어에 나타나는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 동해안 어촌 지역의 언어 문화적 요소를 찾을 수 있었으며 이는 농촌 지역과는 다른 하나의 사회방언으로 볼 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이제까지 어촌의 언어와 문화는 그 중요성에 비해 많이 다루어지지 않았다. 그러한 점에서 어촌의 배경을 바탕으로 한 이 글은 어촌 생활어 어휘망을 구축하기 위한 토대를 마련하였다고 할 수 있다. 또 어촌 지역의 환경, 어획물, 음식에 관한 어휘를 통해 농촌 지역과는 다른 어촌 지역만의 지역성을 찾을 수 있었다. 이러한 동해안 언어문화 연구는 소멸 위기의 어촌 생활어를 발굴, 기록할 수 있다는 점 외에도 우리 민족과 역사를 같이 한 어촌에 대한 생활과 문화를 알아볼 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 가질 것이다. 더 나아가 어촌의 언어와 문화를 정리하는 것은 우리 민족의 생활사를 기록한다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the language practice of people in a fishing village in the East Sea region as fishing villages are disappearing because of rapid social change. The language and culture of fishing villages have not been studied much despite their importance. In this context, this study has laid the foundation for building everyday lexicon in fishing villages. The vocabulary related to the environment, fisheries, and food in the fishing region showed its unique locality, which is different from that in rural regions. As part of the Korean history, this study on language and culture in the East Sea region is particularly significant as it serves as a documentation of the village’s basic everyday language that is at risk of perishing, in addition to their way of life and culture in fishing villages as part of the history of the nation. Moreover, a review on the language and culture of the fishing village has an implication of the early modern and contemporary history of the Korean nation.
