無縁墓についての一考察

A Case Study of Increasing Abandoned Graves

本稿は現在の日本において社会問題化している無縁墓について、増加していく原因が何なのかを探ることに重きを置いている。 原因は様々なものが考えられるが、遠因として、まず地域的な問題が存在すると考えられる。地方などに就職してしまうと、その移動に費やされる時間や費用の問題が存在する。また、先祖に対する概念の変化も考えられる。それは墓を受け継いで行かなければならないものとしての存在価値が下がっていくことを意味しており、これに関連して寿命が長くなってい ることも理由として挙げられる。これらの問題は遠因として考えられるが、近因として考えられるものとして、最も深刻で、元凶とされる原因に 少子化がある。最も明解な答えと言えるだろう。単純に管理し、継ぐ者が いないというのである。このように無縁墓の増加というものは、一概に語 れるものではないのである。 無縁墓の増加はこのような様々な要因が複合的に絡み合って生じさせている現象であり、一つ一つを解決したところで、無縁墓増加の速度を遅ら せることはできても解決とはならないのである。

Increase of unkept graves in Japan is a pressing social problem around the country. Some of the reasons stem from the decline of birthrates that leaves no family lineage to care for graves. Job opportunities in major cities lead younger family members to move out of their hometowns, which makes it difficult for them to return to their hometowns. Another factor may very well be that Japanese do not have time or money to care for their family graves. The question then arises of whether Japan’s respect for ancestors have diminished. The nation may be able to mitigate the issues, but since a number of complex factors are inherent to the issues, a full-fledged solution cannot be proposed.
