  • 53

The purpose of this study is to research the historical, literary and ideological meaning of the play “Vladimir” of the 17th - 18th century Russian writer Feofan Prokopovich. First, we looked at the historical, religious, and cultural situation of the late 17th and early 18th centuries Russia and the life of Feofan Prokopovich. In the 17th century Kiev, where the artist was born, there was coexistence of Orthodox, Catholic, Unyat, and coexistence of secular culture of Western Europe and ascetic culture of Eastern church. The Kiev-Mogila Academy, where the artist was educated, was a educational institution of Orthodox church, but tolerant of other religions. During his studies in Rome and Germany, he also knew about ancient Greek culture, European rationalism and Lutheran religious reformation. Next, we made a special study of Baroque and also examined the tradition of the School drama, which is prevalent in Russian literature in the 17th and 18th centuries. And then we researched the artist’s theory of ‘tragedokomediya’ genres and artistic fiction. Finally, on the base of these results we analyzed the structure of the conflicts and the characterization of personas, which reveals ideology of writer. “Vladimir” is not a work expressing the writer s support for the reform of Peter the Great, but the representation of contemporary conflicts and the conclusion reached by the artist, who had struggled between various values.
