<Gold-lined drawing on Shakyamuni Buddha’s Preaching> possessed by Honolulu Museum of Art is the significant piece with outstanding art style representing the painting of Shakyamuni Buddha’s preaching in early Joseon Dynasty. To deliver subject of Buddha’s preaching clearly, the overall painting compresses icon to center of the painting and filled the surrounding background with clouds for icon with strong concentration. The high-quality Buddhist painting in line drawing was created although Buddist painting was expressed only with glit. The drawing technique and space arrangement replacing color, the biggest difficulty in Buddhist painting in line drawing, are not confusing at all and are very clear. The superb skills of painter also can be seen by spaces filled with various patterns without blank spaces. Particularly, before painting glit on body part of each sacred image of Buddha, white pigment was painted lightly and glit was painted over the white pigment. Such technique increased brightness of body part compared to other glit lines. The painting over technique also inflated surface and delivers three-dimensional feeling. The existing researches assume that production date for drawing on Buddha is around mid 16th century. Considering <Gold-lined drawing of Amitabha Buddha and the Eight Great Bodhisattvas> possessed by Japan in 1532, drawing style of Buddhist painting in line drawing from loyal court in 16th century, <Buddhist painting in line drawing> possessed by National Museum of Korea in 1562, <Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings painting> possessed by Japanese Kyomo-ji and facial expression of svadeva and followers, and posture of Four Deva, it is assumed that the drawing was created around 1562 or before 1562. In addition, gold-lined drawing on Shakyamuni Buddha’s preaching shares drawing style with drawing on Buddha from loyal court whih has been created with concept of ‘conservatism’ on drawing style. Therefore, it is assumed that founder of Honolulu Museum of Art had status as high as loyal family. Furthermore, <Gold-lined drawing on Shakyamuni Buddha’s Preaching> possessed by Honolulu Museum of Art provides impression of space which maximizes the subject. On lower part of the drawing, Cheongbeopjja appears, which is rarely seen on Buddhist painting in line drawing during Joseon Dynasty. <Gold-lined drawing on Shakyamuni Buddha’s Preaching> also has remarkable feature of suggesting preaching scene at woodcut print.
