초등학생들의 영어어휘수준에 따른 어휘학습전략 양상의 차이

Differences of Korean Elementary School Students’ English Vocabulary Learning Strategies with Reference to Their Vocabulary Levels.

본 연구는 우리나라 초등학교 영어 학습자들이 어휘를 학습하면서 주로 사용하는 어휘학습전략이 무엇이며, 학습자의 어휘학습전략 사용이 영어 어휘수준(상, 중, 하)에 따라 차이가 있는지를 알아보는데 있다. 이를 위하여 초등학교 4학년 90명을 대상으로 어휘학습전략 설문과 영어 어휘능력 평가를 실시하였다. 그 결과 초등학교 4학년 학생들은 어휘학습전략 중 발견전략을 강화전략보다 상대적으로 많이 사용하였고, 전체 하위 6가지 전략 중에서는 강화전략인 상위인지전략을 상대적으로 가장 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 초등학교 4학년 학생들의 어휘학습전략 차이에 따른 영어 어휘수준은 집단 간 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었으며, 어휘 수준이 높을수록 더 자주 어휘학습전략을 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 사후분석 결과 6가지 전략 중 결정전략, 인지전략, 상위인지전략, 사회적강화전략은 어휘능력 수준별로 유의미 한 차이가 있었지만 사회적발견전략, 기억전략은 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다. 결론적으로 상위 수준의 학습자들의 어휘학습전략의 사용이 높다는 것은 어휘학습전략이 영어 어휘능력을 향상시키는 중요한 역할을 할 수 있음을 의미한다. 이에 상위 수준의 학생들이 많이 사용하는 학습전략을 중·하위 수준 학습자들에게 교사가 지도할 필요가 있으며, 또한 상·중·하 수준 모두에게 낮은 평균을 보인 기억전략에 대한 어휘 학습 활동을 개발할 필요성이 있다.

This study investigated differences of Korean Elementary school students’ use of English vocabulary learning strategies in accordance to their English vocabulary proficiency level. To this end, a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire and a vocabulary test were used as instruments to collect the data on the students’ learning strategies use and vocabulary size. ANOVA was used to analyze the data of 90 students of elementary school participated in this study. The results showed that discovery strategies were more prevalent than consolidation strategies and meta-cognitive strategies in the sub-construct of both discovery and consolidation strategies were mainly used by learners. A significant statistical difference found in the usages of vocabulary learning strategies among three vocabulary proficiency levels. Those in the high level used vocabulary learning strategies more frequently than the other groups. The results also showed that memory and social discovery strategies was not positively correlated with their vocabulary level. However there was a significant statistical difference in other four sub-construct: determination, cognitive, meta-cognitive and social consolidation strategies. These findings suggest that the certain vocabulary learning strategies that high level learners used could play important role to middle and lower level to improve their vocabulary proficiency. Those vocabulary learning strategies that high level learners use need to be copied for the middle and low level learners. Vocabulary learning activities on improving memory strategies that all learners earned lower score also need to be developed to strengthen their long term memory.
